Dentrix Document Preview Issue: What Dental Practices Need to Know

Update (June 2026): A recent Microsoft security update is affecting Word document previews in Dentrix’s Document Center. Here’s what you should know — and why we recommend against Dentrix’s “quick fix.”
The Issue
Microsoft’s June 2025 Cumulative Update (KB5094126) broke the ability to preview Word documents directly within Dentrix’s Document Center. Instead of seeing the document, users get an “unable to preview” error.
Dentrix is offering two workarounds:
Option 1: Export & Review (Recommended)
Export the document to your desktop and open it from there. You can view, edit, and print normally. This is a minor workflow disruption — maybe 10 extra seconds per document.
Option 2: Roll Back the Security Update (Not Recommended)
Dentrix’s second option is uninstalling KB5094126 to restore the preview function. We advise against this.
That update patches 72 vulnerabilities, including:
- CVE-2025-29828 (CVSS 8.1) — Windows Cryptographic Services
- CVE-2025-32710 (CVSS 8.1) — Windows Remote Desktop Services
- CVE-2025-30399 (CVSS 7.5) — .NET and Visual Studio
Removing it exposes your workstations to known, actively exploited security flaws. The convenience of in-app previews isn’t worth the risk.
Our Recommendation
Use the export workaround until Dentrix releases a proper fix. Your IT provider can also help you explore “Print to PDF” workflows as a temporary bridge.
